Text Box: Song of the Uterus

My skin is white paper,
the ribs beneath
stretch like a frame,
lines to put music on or between,
a scale.
Some notes hang below
on their own lines.
My uterus rests down there,
a dark note with a quick tail.
It has two voices singing cathedral music.
My womb, my House of Prayer,
knows two religions.
God and the Devil practise
inside these circular walls.
My womb, I say,
is a place of birth and death,
a place that knows you and denies you.
It calls you to its doors and slams them.
It brings you inside and sings for you.
It brings you to the Threshold.
My womb steals your children
and gives you earthy angels.
It takes your seed like an offering
or spits it out.
My Cathedral is a stronghouse
and a place all broken down.
It is a Promised Land.
It is a Red Sea.
The notes of our songs tickle in the throat.
I can sing two songs for you,
take you both ways -
I can cast your devils down like spit.
I can bring your angels to earth.
