Text Box: The Amiens Labyrinth

You came in from sunlight, arms brimming

with a gift of apples for my table.

I tied on my apron for you.

Your hands joined in the task, over the babble

of their rosy faces, the white fruits

quartered in our hands, the pot steaming

behind us. The apples were readied for saucing

in this room where I do the cooking.

Now your face flushes red, fists balled on the

table, knuckle-white. And the old saying still

stands, darling. You knew my kitchen was hot.

It's too late for the apples.

Apples is a poem from The Marriage Sedan, the first section of the book. The Body Labyrinth by Sharon Berg (1984) Coach House Press, Ontario, Canada
