You came in from sunlight, arms brimming with a gift of apples for my table. I tied on my apron for you.
Your hands joined in the task, over the babble of their rosy faces, the white fruits quartered in our hands, the pot steaming behind us. The apples were readied for saucing in this room where I do the cooking.
Now your face flushes red, fists balled on the table, knuckle-white. And the old saying still stands, darling. You knew my kitchen was hot. It's too late for the apples. |
