Text Box: Meet the Man, Meet the Mystery

Who is William McClure Brown? The short answer: he was a Canadian painter and print-maker living in Wales. This still leaves us asking who was the man behind the painter’s brush? And just what happened during the time his friends and family refer to as the “lost years”? Why would he refuse to speak of this period, even with those who were closest to him? 
 
William Brown was born in Canada on December 11, 1953 and made his home in Wales from 1977 until his untimely death on July 17th, 2008. In the 1990s, when responding to my daughter’s request to know more about her father than the painter, he said there was nothing much to know beyond his work. Yet, while he was both prolific and driven, even William must have known his friends and family would disagree with a complete rejection of the man apart from the painter. 

Indeed, William quoted from Socrates at his website, williambrown.com: ‘The unexamined life is not worth living’. Ironically enough, William became well known, especially in the U.K. and Europe, as a narrative painter and storyteller. There is always a storyline behind his pieces that needs to be puzzled out.
